Cuenca is the third most important city in Ecuador. Its historic center is listed as World Heritage Trust site by UNESCO for the conservation of its colonial architecture of the fourteenth century.
Listed as one of the best places in the world to retire, Cuenca has a large number of foreign residents. This means that there is a great amount and diversity of cultural activities, food and nightlife. There is even a local newspaper "Cuenca High Life" that reports events and news in English.
Cuenca is full of squares, churches and beautiful places to visit. It has a tourist bus ($ 8) that leaves the Calderón Park and passes through the main tourist attractions. In addition, Cuenca is a perfect center for daytrips to nearby communities and national parks such as Ingapirca, Biblián, Gualaceo, Chordeleg, Sigsig and the famous El Cajas National Park.
Its main festivity is on November 3 (day of independence of Cuenca) that together with the national holidays of November 1 and 2 for the day of the deceased, makes a great period of holidays and celebrations in the city. Also on April 12 the anniversary of the city is celebrated where the Cuencans show off their very civic pride with artificial games and parades.
